Ford Motor Co. will conduct a pair of recalls to fix airbag software and door handle defects in Escape small SUVs and C-Max multipurpose vehicles.
The affected models were produced during the 2013-2014 model years.
The larger recall covers 692,700 Escapes worldwide, 84% of which are in the U.S. Ford says the SUVs have exterior door handles that can bind and prevent the door latch from engaging fully. Under those circumstances, the door could open accidentally when the vehicle is in motion. Dealers will realign the handles.
A separate recall of 692,500 Escapes and C-Max vehicles will reprogram faulty software that could prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying in certain rollover crashes. The campaign includes about 627,500 Escapes also involved in the door handle recall. Dealers will reprogram the software.
