Exports by Turkey’s auto industry grew 15% to 1.14 million vehicles in 2016, according to trade association OSD. It was the fourth consecutive record high and the first time annual volume topped 1 million units.
Vehicle production in the country rose 9% to 1.48 million units, the second record high in as many years, The Nikkei reports. Turkey exports almost 80% of its production, primarily to Europe.
Exports in 2016 were led by Tofas Turk Otomobil, a venture between Koc Holding and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which shipped 279,000 vehicles. Tofas was followed by Renault (270,000 units), Ford (256,000), Hyundai (207,000) and Toyota (109,000), The Nikkei says.
