President Donald Trump and the CEOs of General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles this morning discussed how to create a stronger and more domestically based auto industry.

No specifics emerged from the breakfast session. But the CEOs describe the meeting as upbeat and constructive. GM CEO Mary Barra notes that a stronger U.S. economy will help the industry, its employees, suppliers and customers.

Trump indicated carmakers can expect an easing of unspecified regulations, lower corporate tax rates and other economic enticements under his administration. In exchange, he expects the companies to find ways to add jobs in the U.S.

Trump describes himself as an environmentalist but reiterates that he considers current environmental regulations “out of control.” Ford CEO Mark Fields suggested the new administration focus on data-driven regulation, business tax reform and curbing currency manipulation by other countries.
