Toyota Motor Corp. says its first fuel-cell-powered car for retail customers will debut in Japan next spring with a price tag of 7 million yen ($68,700).

The still-unnamed midsize sedan will be introduced in low numbers to European and U.S. markets by the end of 2015.

Fuel-cell cars offer driving ranges akin to those of gasoline-powered vehicles. But skeptical analysts say such models aren't likely to gain sales traction without a hydrogen refueling infrastructure and government subsidies to reduce the purchase price.

Japan and California have announced multi-million-dollar programs to build hydrogen stations. Bloomberg News notes that Japan hopes to cut the after-incentives price of fuel-cell cars 70% by 2025, creating a market that can generate annual revenue of 1 trillion yen ($9.8 billion) by 2030.
