Toyota Motor Corp. has agreed to increase monthly base wages for its workers in Japan by an average 2,700 yen ($26) per month.

The increase is the first since Toyota hiked monthly wages by 1,000 yen in 2008.

Japan's carmakers tend to maintain relatively low base wages but pay big bonuses based on company performance. Under their new agreement, Toyota's workers will receive an average annual bonus of 2.4 million yen ($23,700) roughly equal to more than six months of wages.
