Toyota Motor Corp. is pursuing technology to enable automated driving, but it also believes the driver should always be in command.

Moritaka Yoshida, who heads the company's vehicle control systems development, tells Automotive News Europe that a vehicle's driver should always be "at the center."

Still, he tells the online newspaper that Toyota's research on self-driving technologies will continue at a "very high level." He likens the company's philosophy about self-driving aids to an airplane's autopilot, where the pilot takes over for key operations.
