Toyota Motor Corp. took the wraps off the Future Toyota Adventure Concept (FT-AC) off-road model on Thursday at the Los Angeles auto show, marking the carmaker’s third such concept this year.

The RAV4-sized FT-C follows the TJ
Cruiser shown in October at the Tokyo auto show and the FT-4X, which was unveiled in April at the New York auto show. Toyota describes the vehicles as design studies, but analysts expect them to lead to at least one new production model.

Toyota’s two current off-road vehicles—the 4Runner and Land Cruiser—are truck-like body-on-frame designs. The concepts are car-based crossover models.

The FT-C’s powerful stance features a long wheelbase and wide track. Designed for active lifestyles, the FT-AC sports body protection (skid plates and fender flares), a tall ride height, fog lights and tow hooks.

Engine power is sent to all four wheels with torque vectoring technology, which can independently control each wheel to enhance traction and off-road performance. The concept’s 20-inch wheels are clad in off-road tires.

Other goodies include a roof rack, retractable bicycle rack, wi-fi connectivity, detachable fog lights and removable infrared cameras mounted to the exterior mirrors. The latter two features enable operators to capture video about their trips and live-stream them to social media via their smartphones.
