Shell Oil Co.’s Equilon Enterprises subsidiary plans to build a hydrogen station at Toyota Motor Corp.’s Logistics Services port location in Long Beach, Calif.

The partners have been awarded $8 million by the California Energy Commission to complete the program. Shell will build, own and operate the station, which will supply hydrogen to Toyota’s fuel cell-powered Class 8 concept truck and public fleets.

The companies hope the facility also will encourage the use of other fuel cell-powered trucks in the area, which is one of the world’s largest freight hubs. Shell will source the hydrogen from Toyota’s adjacent Tri-Gen facility, which produces the fuel from 100% renewable biogas.

Equilon also is working with Toyota and Honda to open seven hydrogen stations for passenger cars in northern California. Currently, California is the only state in the U.S. where fuel cell vehicles are sold.
