Toyota Motor Corp. is again recalling 780,600 vehicles to fix a rear suspension problem that may not have been correctly repaired when the same vehicles were recalled a year ago.
The campaign covers more than 760,000 of the company's 2006-2011 model RAV4 small SUVs and some 18,000 of its 2010 model Lexus HS250h hybrid sedans, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The new recall addresses the same problem Toyota dealers attempted to fix 12 months ago. If rear wheel alignment work is done incorrectly, the threaded ends of the vehicle's adjustable lower suspension arms could rust and break. A fracture would create a sudden change in rear-wheel alignment that could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Toyota says it will conduct the second recall in phases between now and February. The company intends to re-inspect all vehicles that were repaired under last year's campaign.
