Volkswagen Group displaced General Motor Co. for second place, outselling GM by 4.97 million to 4.92 million vehicles in January-June.
First-half growth rates for Toyota, VW and GM were 3.8%, 5.9% and 1.4%, respectively.
Analysts note that VW's total includes sales of commercial trucks. When the comparison is restricted to passenger vehicle sales, GM outsold VW in the first half.
