Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing to recall about 228,000 of its 2016-2017 model Tacoma compact pickup trucks with rear axle differentials that could leak oil, seize and cause a crash.

A differential contains gears that split power from the engine’s driveshaft to the two rear wheels. If oil used to lubricate the gears leaks out, the gears could overheat, wear prematurely and eventually lock up.

Dealers will tighten or replace fasteners, replace a gasket or replace the entire differential depending upon need. Toyota expects to begin the callback in June.
