Toyota Motor Corp. will launch a new hatchback version of its Corolla compact car this summer in the U.S.

The 2019 model will be publicly unveiled next week at the New York auto show. The European version of the vehicle, known as the Auris hatchback, was introduced earlier this month at the Geneva auto show.

The U.S. hatchback will be powered by a direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with variable-valve technology. The Auris gets a turbocharged 1.2-liter mill and multiple hybrid variants. There are no plans to offer hybrid versions of the Corolla hatchback in the U.S.

The Corolla’s engine will be available with a choice of a 6-speed manual or Toyota’s Dynamic-Shift continuously variable transmission with 10 simulated gears. Toyota says the manual gearbox automatically rev-matches on downshifts to enhance smoothness and add a sporty feel.
