Toyota Motor Corp. and its subsidiaries sold 2.5 million vehicles in the second quarter compared with 2.4 million units for General Motors and 2.3 million for Volkswagen.
According to the companies' figures, their global sales through the first three quarters of 2013 were 7.4 million units for Toyota, 7.3 million for GM and 7 million for VW.
Analysts say part of Toyota's success is due to government policies that weaken the yen, thus making lowering the price of Japanese goods sold overseas. The yen has dropped about 11% against the U.S. dollar so far this year.
