Toyota Motor Corp. tells Reuters it may not decide whether to continue making its Auris five-door hatch in Burnaston, England, until terms of the country’s exit from the European Union become clear.
The current Auris will end production in about 2020. Executive Vice President Didier Leroy says Toyota will likely decide whether to replace the car with a new model by 2018, although a commitment to invest in the new tooling required could be delayed.
Like other carmakers, Toyota is concerned that quitting the EU will saddle the U.K. with import tariffs on goods it sells in Europe.
Reuters says Toyota might opt to simply continue building the current model in England—or phase out the slow-selling model entirely. One big question, Leroy notes, is whether to replace the Auris with another Europe-specific model or introduce a successor that uses more globally designed components.
