Toyota Motor Corp. hints that it may develop a production version of the FT-4X subcompact crossover it unveiled at the New York auto show this week.

Described as a “four-wheel-drive toolbox,” the chunky little four-door SUV features pronounced exterior planes, an unusually flat roof and a large two-way rear hatch that can swing open vertically or horizontally.

Designers at Toyota’s Calty Design Research unit in Newport Beach, Calif., say they were striving for a sense of rugged charm for the FT-4X. The concept uses the same “TNGA” platform that will carry Toyota’s upcoming C-HR small crossover. Both vehicles share the same wheelbase and similar overall dimensions.

The interior of the FT-4X is festooned with such unusual features as door handles that double as storage boxes or water bottles, and interior lighting that can be removed and used as flashlights. A sleeping bag fits between the front seats and serves as an armrest. The vehicle’s removable audio system also serves as a portable boom box.

Much of the interior is designed to accommodate wet or muddy outdoor gear with special bins and heating/cooling/drying vents. Handles, knobs and switches are large and designed to be easy to operate when wearing gloves.
