Toyota Motor Corp. is moving forward with plans to launch a second-generation version of the GT86 sports coupe, European marketing chief Matt Harrison, tells Autocar.

The new model will be positioned below the upcoming Supra performance car in Toyota’s lineup. Harrison provided no timetable for the redesigned GT86, but previous reports have suggested the car could bow by early next decade.

As with the original GT86 launched in 2011(initially marketed as the Scion FR-S in the U.S.), the second-generation coupe will be developed with Subaru Inc.

The GT86 and Subaru’s BRZ variant are powered by the latter company’s 4-cylinder “boxer” engines. The GT86 (pictured) received a mid-cycle freshening in 2016.

Both the GT86 and Supra are halo products for Toyota. But Harrison notes that they are designed for different audiences.

Other Toyota officials have indicated a third sports car also could be in the works. A report earlier this month suggested the carmaker is leaning toward a midlevel vehicle rather than an entry-level model positioned below the GT86.
