Toyota Motor Corp. has officially opened a $154 million expansion of its North American R&D Purchasing and Prototype Development (TMNA R&D) campus in York Township outside Ann Arbor, Mich.

The project, which began three years ago, consolidates existing Toyota r&d activities in Michigan with vehicle and powertrain work relocated from California and procurement and supplier engineering development activities from the company’s operations in Erlanger, Tenn.

Toyota set up its first U.S. r&d operation 40 years ago. The expanded York Township complex is managed by Shinichi Yasui, who arrived last month. Yasui is a Toyota managing officer, president of global engineering and manufacturing and executive vice president of TMNA R&D.
