Toyota, BMW, GM Idle Some Operations in Egypt

BMW AG and General Motors Co. say they suspended work at their factories and dealerships in Egypt last week as a precautionary measure after the country's military deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

Toyota Motor Corp. continued operations at its plant there but shut its dealerships in the country for three days because of growing political unrest.

BMW and GM have said they expect to resume work by today at their Egyptian plants, according to Automotive News Europe.

All three companies assemble vehicles from kits at facilities in or near Cairo. The capitol has been the epicenter of massive and sometimes violent demonstrations before and after Morsi's ouster last Wednesday.

BMW builds 3 Series compact cars in Egypt. GM makes Chevrolet and Opel small cars, vans and commercial vehicles. Toyota assembles the Fortuner midsize SUV.
