Ford Motor Co. says it will add a 6-lb rear storage shelf to the U.S. variant of its EcoSport compact SUV that can support as much as 700 lbs, thanks to the use of a honeycomb-like design.

Ford Motor Co. says it will add a 6-lb rear storage shelf to the U.S. variant of its EcoSport compact SUV that can support as much as 700 lbs, thanks to the use of a honeycomb-like design.
The lightweight shelf is composed of a layer of hexagon-shaped cells made of 100% recycled paper and water-based glue sandwiched between two layers of composite material. Measuring 39 x 25 inches, the removable floorboard can slide into multiple shelving slots in the EcoSport’s cargo bay.
Ford has marketed the EcoSport in Europe for several years. An updated version of the vehicle will be offered in the U.S. in early 2018.
