Kingston Chan, who joined Tesla Motor Inc. a year ago to launch the electric carmaker's brand in China, has quit for personal reasons, according to local reports.

Tesla confirms that Chang has left the company but declines further comment, Bloomberg News reports. The news service says Chang formerly was with the China unit of Volkswagen AG's Bentley Motors Group and has more than 20 years of experience in the auto industry.

Tesla has been taking advance orders for its Model S electric sedan since August. The company said in January the price of the $81,100 car would jump to $121,400 (734,000 yuan) in China, thanks to shipping, import duties and local taxes.

Tesla has not indicated how many vehicles it expects to sell in China.
