The $1,500 feature includes a special embedded layer that blocks 98% of ultraviolet rays and helps prevent the interior from overheating on hot days, according to the carmaker. The same construction is used for the panoramic windshield of the Model X SUV and the roof on the prototype for the Model 3 midsize sedan that Tesla plans to launch in about a year.
Last week Tesla formed a glass technology group and unveiled a solar glass roof panel for buildings. CEO Elon Musk said the Model 3 will use some of the same technology, though not the solar cells, for its glass roof.
