Tata Motors Ltd. has launched a voluntary retirement plan in a bid to eliminate as many as 500 managers.
The initiative is the company’s biggest white-collar cutback ever, according to The Times of India. The newspaper says Tata Motors' most recent buyout initiative trimmed about 250 hourly workers more than a year ago.
The cuts are in conjunction with the debut of Tata’s attempt to gain agility and speed b reducing its 14 levels of management to five. The new structure takes effect in April. The Times says the company has identified 120 job descriptions in the top two levels and is defining roles for the remaining three tiers.
Some midlevel executives displaced by the reorganization will be reassigned to centralized finance and data analytics operations in Pune, according to the report.
