Suzuki Motor Corp. tells shareholders it will expand the number of service and repair shops it operates in India to 5,000 in 2020 from about 3,200 currently.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. controls 40% of India’s car market and generates about half of Suzuki’s global unit sales. CEO Toshihiro Suzuki, who became CEO a year ago, declares the move aims to “absolutely defend” the company’s market leadership as competition grows.

Suzuki says 60% of the service facilities will be associated with the brand’s dealerships. The others will provide similar maintenance and repair work on an independent basis.
