The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says 57 of the car and light truck models it tested this year have won 2019 its “Top Safety Pick +” or “Top Safety Pick” awards.
All 57 posted IIHS’s top “good” rating in five of its crashworthiness tests, plus “acceptable” or better performance in the institute’s new passenger-side small-overlap front crash test and nighttime headlamp evaluation.
Subaru (left) topped all brands this year with seven models that won “Top Safety Pick +” awards. Hyundai won four and its Kia affiliate won five of the same awards. Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota each collected top honors.
IIHS notes that some winners come from manufacturers that don’t yet equip base models with the same advanced headlights and crash prevention systems installed in fancier models. The center adds that cars and SUV/crossovers captured almost all of this year’s highest honors, although a variety of minicars and minivans won a second-best “Top Safety Pick” award.
