Kia Motors Corp. is recalling 51,600 Soul multipurpose vehicles in the U.S. to replace and secure the steering system's pinion gear. The gear could loosen, causing a total loss of steering control.
The callback covers 2014 models produced between July 2013 and last January.
Kia tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a plug intended to secure the pinion gear was installed without sufficient thread-locking compound. The company reports three warranty claims but no crashes. It plans to begin the recall later this month.
