Charlotte, Mich.-based Spartan Motors Inc. has hired Todd Heavin as chief operating officer.

Heavin succeeds Thomas Ninneman, who left the company earlier this year to become CEO of Madison, Wis.-based Monroe Truck Equipment.

Heavin most recently led American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc.’s casting operations. He joined that company as part of AAM’s 2016 acquisition of Metaldyne Performance Group Inc., where he helped oversee the acquisitions of Grede and Citation. Heavin also held leadership positions at Delphi, Formtech, Intermet and United Technologies.

As Spartan’s COO, Heavin will oversee the company’s manufacturing, engineering, quality assurance, supply chain management, project management, and environmental health and safety teams. He will report to CEO and President Daryl Adams.

Founded in 1975, Spartan Motors produces a range of specialty, emergency and recreational vehicles. The company’s sales grew 15% last year to $816 million.
