The U.S. Senate has voted 59:40 to confirm Gina McCarthy as the new administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.
McCarthy has been assistant administrator for the EPA's clean-air office since 2009. She succeeds Lisa Jackson, who stepped down in January. Deputy administrator Bob Perciasepe been the agency's acting administrator since then.
McCarthy had been awaiting a Senate vote since President Barack Obama proposed her for the EPA job in early March the longest delay for any of the president's second-term nominees. Some Republican lawmakers accused her of promoting environmental policies that hurt the economy. One GOP senator asked McCarthy for written answers to more than 700 questions.
She was cleared for the job after a bipartisan deal earlier this week that paved the way for confirmation of a string of Obama nominees.
