Fifty North American journalists have chosen semi-finalists for the North American car, truck and utility vehicles of the year.
The list of 19 eligible 2020 cars has been winnowed to an even dozen. Those still in contention are the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac CT5, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Soul, Mazda3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Polestar 1, Porsche 911, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Supra and Volkswagen Arteon.

The utility category has been trimmed from 22 eligible vehicles to 12 SUV/crossover models. The semi-finalists are the Audi E-Tron, Cadillac XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Explorer and Escape, Honda Passport, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Lincoln Aviator and Corsair, Subaru Outback and Volvo V60 Cross Country.
All five of the eligible pickup trucks made the cut to the next round. They comprise the Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty, Ford Ranger, GMC Sierra Heavy Duty, Jeep Gladiator and Ram Heavy Duty.
The three finalists in each group will be named at the Los Angeles auto show in November. Winners will be announced early next year.
