Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit has taken the wraps off the first of seven model it’s planning to launch under the Cupra performance sub-brand by 2020.
The Cupra Ateca is an all-wheel-drive version of the base SEAT Ateca crossover/SUV. The vehicle, which will debut later this year in Europe, will get a more powerful engine, new transmission and sportier suspension.
Power comes from Volkswagen Group’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which has been retuned to make 296 hp 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a Haldex all-wheel drive system. The combination propels the Cupra Ateca from zero to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph.
The SUV’s suspension height is lowered by 20 mm, and the spring rates and suspension settings have been revised. Standard adaptive dampers will enable improved dynamics when using the special “Cupra” driving mode setting. The vehicle also will offer optional 18-inch Brembo disc brakes.
The Cupra Ateca sports a rear wing and bulkier bumpers, along with several carbon fiber components. The interior is highlighted by a host of high-end materials and customized features.
SEAT will award Cupra sub-franchises to about one-fifth of its dealer network. The carmaker expects annual sales will reach 20,000 units by early next decade.
The Cupra (short for cup racing) name debuted in 1996 with a souped-up version of the Ibiza city car. SEAT likens the new marque to that of Renault’s Sport and Fiat’s Abarth sub-brands.
