Schaeffler AG is partnering with Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on a joint research lab for new mobility products and services in the city-state. It's Schaeffler's first new-mobility center outside Europe.
Combined funding for the lab will be about $3.4 million over the next three years. Researchers will study various aspects of personal urban mobility and intelligent transportation, including user behavior on personal mobility systems, wireless communication and the development of smart technologies that can enhance safety and last-mile experience.
Schaeffler also is part of the NTU-NXP smart mobility consortium, which was founded by NTU, NXP Semiconductors and 12 industry members to develop smart mobility systems. The new lab will make use of the consortium's vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity pilot program, which includes video cameras mounted on street lamps throughout the university’s campus.
Government incentives have helped make Singapore a hub for advanced research and development programs related to autonomous vehicles and smart city technologies. Recent supplier programs there include tests by Delphi and Nutonomy.
