Volkswagen Group’s Scania commercial truck unit says it will spend 1.4 billion reais ($346 million) to update its commercial truck plant outside Sao Paulo, Brazil, Reuters reports.
The investment in the Sao Bernardo do Campo facility comes three months after Ford Motor Co. announced it is shutting down its truck plant nearby and exiting the Brazilian heavy truck market later this year.
Scania will begin its upgrades in 2021 and complete them in 2024 to prepare the San Bernardo plant for next-generation trucks. The company currently is three years into a four-year, 2.6 billion reais ($642 million) expansion in Brazil.
