Saab Automobile's new owner says the company will begin limited production of the 9-3 sedan today at Saab's factory in Trollhattan, Sweden.

Saab went bankrupt in two years ago and was acquired in 2012 by National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB. The Chinese consortium has been rebuilding Saab's supply chain since then.

NEVS originally intended to relaunch the Saab brand in 2014 with an electric next-generation 9-3. But last year the consortium said it would first reintroduce the conventionally powered 9-3 that went out of production two years ago. Those cars will be marketed in Europe and China.

The company says it plans to add an electrified version of the current 9-3 sometime next year. Eventually NEVS plans to manufacture cars based on the Phoenix platform Saab developed before its bankruptcy.
