Rome is the latest European city to announce plans to prohibit all diesels from operating in the center city by 2024, Reuters reports.
The city already attempts to ban older, higher-polluting diesels on days when air quality is especially poor. The municipality also has tried limiting access every other day to vehicles with corresponding odd- or even-number license plates. Both regulations are largely ignored and aren’t well enforced by police.
About two-thirds of new vehicles sold in Italy last year were diesels. And unlike other parts of Europe, diesels gained market share in the country last year. Reuters says a study by Italy’s culture ministry warns that 3,600 stone monuments and 60 bronze sculptures face serious deterioration because of air pollution.
