Porsche AG is developing coupe and convertible variants of its Panamera sedan (pictured), according to multiple reports.

The programs are described to be “well advanced.” Concept models could be unveiled as early as next year.

German media speculate that the cars will use a shortened version of the Panamera’s MSB platform but not necessarily the Panamera name. The 2+2 models would provide more space and practicality than Porsche’s venerable 911 sports car, serving as spiritual successor to the marque’s former front-engine 928 coupe.

A Panamera grand tourer would compete against other luxury coupes such as the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW 8 Series, Lexus LC500 and Mercedes-Benz SL-Class.

Skeptics note that rumors about an all-new 928 have been circulating since the original model was discontinued in 1995. Reports in recent years have focused on using the Panamera’s underpinnings for such a car.
