Report: VW Electric Microbus to Launch in 2022

Volkswagen AG has approved a plan to launch production version of its electric I.D. Buzz microbus concept in 2022, Automotive News Europe reports.

The online newspaper, which cites unnamed company sources, says VW will announce plans for the vehicle on Saturday at the Concours d’Elegance in California. The carmaker declined to comment but earlier this month said a decision on the vehicle would be made by year-end.

VW has long been testing consumer interest in a 21st century successor to the iconic microbus it introduced in the 1950s. The I.D. Buzz was unveiled at the Detroit auto show last January.

Production and marketing of the I.D. microbus could be split between VW Group’s namesake brand and its light commercial vehicle business, ANE says. The latter was spun off as a separate business unit 15 years ago.

The two organizations already team up on the VW Transporter/T6 vans, which ANE notes include several electric variations.
