Diesels rigged by Volkswagen AG to evade emission laws but repaired by the company now burn as much as 14% more fuel and continue to exceed pollution standards by 400%, says the Australian Automobile Assn.
The group bases its assessment on the result of before-and-after tests by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile), the AFP news agency reports. AAA acknowledges that the original engines emitted as much as 40 times the allowable levels of nitrogen oxides.
VW rejects AAA’s findings. The company reiterates that the software update it developed for the engines was tested and approved by Germany’s KBA motor authority. VW insists the repaired engines meet European and Australian emission standards.
