Toyota Motor Corp. reportedly is developing a single platform to carry future versions of its large and midsize pickup trucks worldwide.
The chassis, dubbed F1, would underpin next-generation Tundra large pickups and Tacoma midsize trucks, sources tell Automotive News. Toyota already produces both models on one line at its factory in Texas, but they use different platforms. Moving to a single chassis presumably would lower production costs.
AN’s sources say the first batch of trucks to use the F1 chassis could debut before the end of 2020 as 2021 models. Those trucks also are likely to offer an optional hybrid powertrain, according to the newspaper.
