General Motors Co. won't begin making the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze sedan until the end of 2015, a year later than originally planned, Reuters reports.

Unidentified sources tell the news service that GM has delayed the car because of engineering changes and because the current model is still selling strongly.

Cruze sales in the U.S. surged 17% to 133,700 units in the first half of 2013, according to Autodata Corp.

The Chevy Cruze debuted in Australia and South Korea in 2008. The car went on sale in North America two years later. The current model is produced in several countries, including Brazil, China, India, Korea, Russia and Thailand. U.S. models come from GM's plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
