Former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn received a suspicious €7 million ($8 million) bonus last year from a Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors venture in the Netherlands, Les Echos says.

The company was created in 2017 to pay bonuses to executives of the two carmakers. Nissan acquired a controlling 34% stake in MMC in 2016.

The venture was not supposed to pay bonuses to its board members, which included Ghosn, according to the French financial newspaper. But it says that, without the knowledge of other directors, the venture hired him as an employee, thereby making him eligible for the payments.
