Sources tell The Nikkei that Ford aims to supply the new Fusion/Mondeo to Europe and North America from China. Automotive News says Ford insists “we have no plans” to do so.
Last summer Ford confirmed it will begin supplying Focus small cars to the U.S. from China in 2019, with variants from Europe to come later. The company is retooling its former Fusion plant in Michigan to make more popular and higher-profit Ranger pickup trucks and Bronco midsize SUVs.
Fusion sales in the U.S., which fell 11% to 265,800 units last year, plunged 22% in January-November, according to Autodata Corp. The Fusion brand was introduced in 2005, and annual sales peaked in 2014 at nearly 307,000 units.
