Light-duty vehicles with the ability to drive themselves will account for 75% of the total global market some 95.4 million sales per year by 2035, predicts Navigant Research.

The Boulder, Colo.-based firm's bullish forecast notes that the necessary know-how for autonomous cars is available now and is beginning to appear in some 2014 models.

But the pace of acceptance and adoption will be governed by liability and legislative issues, not technology, Navigant says. It expects gradual but steady growth in self-driving capabilities.
