Andreas Renschler, who suddenly quit as head of production for Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit on Monday, may be headed for Volkswagen AG, according to the Stuttgarter Zeitung.
The newspaper cites unnamed company sources who say VW has presented Renschler with an "attractive" job offer to integrate that company's commercial truck operations.
VW's truck and bus business, which includes Sweden's Scania and Germany's MAN, generates about €35 billion in sales per year. Renschler ran manufacturing at Daimler's commercial truck unit for more than eight years before swapping jobs with Wolfgang Bernhard, who had been performing the same function at Mercedes.
Renschler had been considered a contender to succeed Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, 60. But Renschler, 55, tells The Wall Street Journal he decided to leave Daimler in part because he thinks he would have to wait too long for a chance at the job.
Zetsche, who has occupied the CEO position since 2006, has a three-year contract that expires in 2015. But he appears likely to be renewed for another three years.
