Daimler AG says Andreas Renschler, who has headed manufacturing and procurement for its Mercedes-Benz unit since April, has left for personal reasons.

The highly regarded executive has been a member of Daimler's management board since 2004, the year he was named head of the company's Daimler Trucks unit.

Renschler had been rumored as a possible successor to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. He has been replaced by Markus Schafer, formerly head of vehicle production planning at Mercedes. Schafer once ran the company's American SUV factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
