Renault SA has officially resumed production of its Alpine brand sports car after a 22-year hiatus.

The company spent €36 million ($42 million) to install an assembly line for the iconic two-seater at its factory in Dieppe, France. Renault plans to make no more than 6,000 of the cars per year.

In a bow to the brand’s 1955 debut, the initial production run will be of 1,955 inaugural copies of the A110. The car is a modern interpretation of the Alpine model of the same name that Renault built between 1961 and 1977. The first of the €58,000 ($68,400) coupes is slated for delivery in the first quarter of 2018.

The rear-wheel-drive A110 will compete with the Porsche Cayman. The aluminum-intensive Alpine reportedly will be powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that can be tuned to make as much as 300 hp.
