Renault SA set a track record for front-wheel-drive vehicles at Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschleife course with its Megane RS Trophy-R performance coupe.

The Megane covered the winding 12.8-mile track in 7 minutes and 40 seconds. That bested the previous record by nearly four seconds, which was set two years ago by a Honda Civic Type R.
The record-setting Megane (pictured) is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The new Trophy-R edition, which goes on sale later this year in Europe, is about 290 lbs lighter than the current Megane RS 300 Trophy.
Renault previously held the fwd ’Ring record with the Megane 265 Trophy hatchback. In between records by that vehicle and the Civic Type R, Volkswagen’s Golf GTI Clubsport S was at the front of the class.
