Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s 2018 Jeep Wrangler SUV will feature several evolutionary design changes but maintains the iconic nameplate’s rugged, open-air persona.
Jeep released photos of the redesigned Wrangler this week ahead of a planned public unveiling later this month at the Los Angeles auto show. Sales are due to begin early next year.
The photos indicate the next-generation model will continue to have a fold-down windshield and a removable top and doors—attributes that some aficionados feared would be eliminated. The roof also has been reinforced for added rollover protection and includes an optional power sunroof.
Key changes include a redesigned front-end that features a more upright grille, modified headlights and LED daytime running lights. The turn signals have been moved from the grille to the fenders, and air vents are recessed into the front quarter panels.
Two- and four-door variants will be available. Jeep says the new SUV also will feature improved aerodynamics and advanced safety features.
Previous reports have said the 2018 Wrangler will be powered by a choice of either a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine or the current Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6. Both engines will be mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A diesel option may be added later.
