General Motors Co. plans to unveil all-new versions of the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles next month at the Detroit auto show, according to several media reports.

The next-generation crossovers are expected to go on sale in late 2017. Neither has been redesigned since GM emerged from bankruptcy in 2009.

In recent years the carmaker has focused on overhauling its pickup and sedan lineup. But now it is turning its attention to the hot crossover market, notes The Wall Street Journal, which was the first to report the story. The effort began with the launch of the redesigned GMC Acadia earlier this year. GM also unveiled the all-new Chevy Equinox in September and is readying a second-generation of the Buick Enclave.

The redesigned seven-seat Terrain will share a platform with its Chevy Equinox twin. The smaller Traverse will be paired with the Acadia architecture.

GM also recently launched the all-new Cadillac XT5 midsize crossover, which replaced the aging SRX. The company is planning several other crossovers, including a new Chevy model that will be slotted between the Equinox and Traverse.
