PSA Peugeot Citroen says it will begin assembling its Peugeot 301 in Nigeria later this year.
The cars will be made in unspecified small volumes by PAN Nigeria Ltd. in Kaduna. PSA will supply its partner with partial knockdown kits from the company's assembly plant in Vigo, Spain.
PSA says it may eventually expand the program to include the Peugeot 308 and 508 sedans.
The company's announcement comes three months after rival Renault SA began making Patrol SUVs in Lagos, Nigeria, with partner Stallion Group. Renault describes Nigeria as a "significant" future manufacturing center in Africa. The partners said earlier they intend to add other Renault models, including vans and light trucks.
