PSA Peugeot Citroen is the latest mass-market carmaker to introduce a global modular platform to carry many of its future models.
The new EMP2 short for efficient modular platform architecture will underpin next-generation C and D segment models that represent half of PSA's production. The EMP2 can support coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, MPVs and SUVs, according to the company.
The new architecture weighs 70 kg (154 lbs) less than the platform it replaces. PSA says the lighter design, coupled with low-rolling-resistance tires, engine stop-start, electric steering and other fuel-saving technologies will translate into a 22% reduction in vehicle carbon dioxide emissions.
The EMP2 chassis will debut later this year in the Citroen C4 Picasso MPV made in Vigo, Spain, and the next-generation Peugeot 308 midsize car built in Sochaux, France.
