PSA Peugeot Citroen will begin using a modular chassis later this year to carry next-generation C and D segment models that represent 50% of the company's annual production.
The so-called "efficient modular platform 2" (EMP2) is 70 kg lighter than the current chassis. PSA expects the architecture and related fuel-efficiency technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 22%.
The new platform can be used to carry coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, MPVs and SUVs, according to the company.
PSA will debut the EMP2 chassis in the replacement for the Citroen C4 Picasso MPV made in Vigo, Spain, and the next-generation Peugeot 308 midsize car produced in Sochaux, France.
